Freestanding lace by definition is embroidery which is specially designed to be stitched on “water soluble stabilizer.” This means that the embroidery design stays intact when the stabilizer is washed away in plain water. These stabilizers, (and there are several for different types of applications), are made much the same way as the plastic casings Tide Pods, or other products are made. The best stabilizers for lace, however, are not the plastic film type, by a woven type which keeps its shape better during stitching, and which doesn’t pull away from the stitches as you are stitching.
are many applications for this kind of “lace” beyond what you would normally
think of as lace:
Jewelry, ornaments,Card Holders, and many more!
As you can see, there is a wide variety of types of and uses for freestanding lace!
Sonia Showalter is perhaps my favorite designer of freestanding lace for Angels and earrings!
These designs can be personalized, blinged out with crystals, and made with all the colors of your imagination (or at least the variety of threads I have on hand!). They are appropriate for nearly any season or occasion, and are fun to make!
